About The Music Drummer

At an early age, Mario Fogg was introduced to the world of music. Even though there wasn’t a drum set in his house, he made do with pots and pans laid out on the kitchen floor. Mario’s parents were musicians: his mother a choir director, and his father a bass player. Music was always staring Mario right in the face.

In the Beginning 1990's

Like many drummers, Mario got his early experience playing in church. Growing up and playing in Mario’s church wasn’t an easy feat, being the youngest and smallest out of five drummers; he had to wait his turn to play. This did not discourage Mario. Instead, it motivated him to make sure he was ready when the opportunity arose for him to play a song. If not, his uncle, the church’s first drummer, would stand next to Mario and clap the tempo correctively. This embarrassed Mario because he wanted to get it right the first time. This pressure was enough to drive him further into studying the structure of songs so he would never have to have his uncle come stand and clap next to him, but rather see him bob his head to the funky, smooth grooves coming from Mario's playing. As a result of hard work and dedication and pure talent, Mario found himself as the church’s first call drummer. At school, Mario’s gift and love for the drums became evident as well. During a rehearsal for a school’s play, Mario, his cousin, and a friend would opt out of singing and instead would play on the metal chairs as if they were drums. The teacher was impressed by Mario’s talent and couldn’t help but to feature the young musicians in the school’s play as percussionist.

High school continued to be a proving ground for Mario. He was a standout drummer in the marching and jazz band, earning him an opportunity to play in the All-City and All State Jazz Band in Hampton, Virginia.

Mario continued to play, but wanted to elevate his gift to the next level. He made a decision to move to Atlanta, Georgia, and soon after was accepted to the Atlanta Institute of Music. While attending the Atlanta Institute of Music he was so driven and committed to honing his craft he earned the Achievement based scholarship. This is a merit based scholarship which is awarded based on the student maintaining a high GPA, perfect attendance, and having good reputation as a student with the professors and classmates.

While studying at the Atlanta Institute of Music, Mario was in high demand as a studio session drummer. The recording students would seek him out hearing about Mario’s ability to play with the click, and versatility to play any genre of music. Mario took every opportunity to play and it led him to working with the Atlanta Engineering Society at Turner Studios for their annual student workshop. Mario is quickly becoming relevant among the Atlanta music scene. Sitting in at jam sessions with some of the city’s hottest talent: bass player, Kevin Scott; saxophonist, Kebbie Williams; saxophonist Eric Fontaine; and hitting with groups like, Dexter Tolson and friends. Mario is now currently playing in Def Jam’s recording artist, Verse Simmonds live band.
